We are very pleased to announce that the Grote Prize for 2017 has been awarded to Leen Van Broek. Leen is undertaking a PhD on ‘People, Place and Power in Tacitus’ Germany’ at Royal Holloway University of London. The George Grote Prize is offered every year by the Institute of Classical Studies from the fund bequeathed by the late Professor V. L. Ehrenberg. The Prize of £3000 is awarded for an original and hitherto unpublished study on a topic in ancient history and is open to current research students of the University of London.

This brings us into a network of hosts that includes the Open University, University of Lancaster, the Austrian Institute of Technology, and the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Joanna Ashe as the new Librarian of the Combined Classics Library. She comes to us from the library of the Royal College of Physicians, where she is a senior information specialist, and has an MSc in Library and Information Sciences and a BA in Classics. Following the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the University and the Hellenic and Roman Societies last June, and with the launch of HARL’s major fundraising campaign to support the Library, she joins us at an exciting time.
We invite applications to participate in a training workshop on digital editing of papyrological and epigraphic texts, at the Institute of Classical Studies, London, April 3–7, 2017. The workshop will be taught by Gabriel Bodard and Lucia Vannini (ICS) and Simona Stoyanova (KCL). There will be no charge for the workshop, but participants should arrange their own travel and accommodation.
Applications are invited from senior scholars from universities outside the UK with research interests in any field of classical studies for the newly inaugurated Dorothy Tarrant Fellowship.The closing date for applications for 2017-18 is 31 January 2017. Applications are also invited by 31 January for the T. B. L. Webster Fellowship and the A. D. Trendall Fellowship. Further details of all three Fellowships are available here .
Colin Annis is retiring as Librarian of the Institute of Classical Studies Library and Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies at the end of December. A new Librarian of the Combined Classics Library is now being sought to lead and manage the Classics Combined Library, with overall responsibility for its staff, its collections and its provision of services to readers.Details of the post are available here . The Institute of Classical Studies invites applications for the post of Public Engagement Fellow to be held for 3 years. The post holder will organise public engagement events for the Institute; will participate in public engagement events run by the School of Advanced Study; will collate information about classical public engagement initiatives and impact activity across the UK, producing reports and publications when appropriate; and will carry out a programme of research on an approved subject within the broad field of classical studies.
Professor Greg Woolf, Director of the Institute of Classical Studies, will give his inaugural lecture ' Humans and Other Beings in our Classical Past ' at 5.30pm on 18 January 2017 in the Beveridge Hall, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU. The lecture will be followed by a reception. All are welcome to attend.
The ICS is proposing to elect up to five Research Associates from among applicants who have recently finished their PhDs in any area of classical studies, and who are not yet in full-time positions which have a research component. The positions are non-stipendiary but some assistance with research is available. The positions are tenable for up to 3 years from 1st January 2017.
